Attestation is a formal statement that a control is in place or operating as intended. Audit evidence is the supporting material that proves the statement, such as logs, reports, tickets, configuration snapshots, or independent assurance reports.
How often should vendors be re-attested?
The right cadence depends on materiality and risk. High-risk services may require monthly or event-driven attestation, while moderate-risk services may be reviewed quarterly. Low-risk services can sometimes be reviewed annually, but only if the environment is stable and the data exposure is limited.
What should CISOs do when a vendor cannot provide current evidence?
If current evidence is missing, treat the control as unproven and escalate through risk management. Apply compensating controls, limit access or data scope if needed, set a remediation deadline, and require re-attestation before the service is considered compliant.
